Monash Malaysia celebrates International Women’s Day 2019
Former First Lady of the United States of America, Eleanor Roosevelt once said: “A woman is like a teabag. You never know how strong she is until she gets in hot water”.
Monash Malaysia celebrated International Women’s Day with the theme “Think Equal, Build Smart, Innovate for Change”. The theme by the United Nations for International Women’s Day 2019 aims to encourage gender balance in boardrooms, in the media and in wealth.
“International Women’s Day is a good day to highlight the importance of diversity. We are here to understand that gender is not solely based on biology. We also have to take into consideration social and cultural values. I hope to create an environment where everyone, regardless of gender, race, socio-economic status, feels empowered, and has an enjoyable working experience here at Monash,” said Professor Andrew Walker, President and Pro Vice-Chancellor.
Organised by a team of women, consisting of both academic and professional staff, the event hopes to serve as a catalyst for further activities. “I think we need to look at a new mirror. We want to hear your voices to help propel the Gender Equity initiative in the campus community,” shared Professor Maude Phipps, the co-chair of the event.
A highlight of the event was the launch of the Monash Malaysia Women Empowerment Network (WEN). Its vision is to build a community of women who confidently take charge of their development, support and help each other flourish.
Happy International Women’s Day!
