Profile Summary

Dr Ser Hooi Leng is currently a Research Fellow at Jeffery Cheah School of Medicine and Health Sciences, Monash University Malaysia. She completed her Bachelor of Science (Molecular Biology & Biomedical Science) and Bachelor of Forensics (Forensic Biology) degrees at Murdoch University, Perth (Western Australia) in 2012. Upon returning to Malaysia, she pursued her postgraduate studies at Jeffery Cheah School of Medicine and Health Science (Monash University Malaysia) and completed her PhD studies in 2018. Her PhD project involves identifying novel Streptomyces species from mangrove forests and bioactivities screening of their secondary metabolites. Her enthusiasm for biomedical science research continues to expand, and currently, she is interested in investigating the role of microbiomes in human diseases.

Research / Education interests

Dr Ser has several years of research experience, specifically in the biomedical science field. After completing her undergraduate studies at Murdoch University (Perth), she successfully secured a Summer Research Scholarship and had her first “taste” of research life that sparked her interest in pursuing biomedical science research. After returning to Malaysia, she started to seek research opportunities and pursued her postgraduate studies at Jeffery Cheah School of Medicine and Health Sciences, Monash University Malaysia. While her PhD research may sound like “finding the needle in the haystacks”, she has successfully isolated several bioactive, novel Streptomyces species from the mangrove forest in Malaysia. She completed her doctoral thesis entitled “Biosystematics of novel Streptomyces from mangrove in Malaysia”. Her research on the novel strain “Streptomyces malaysiense” with potent antioxidant and anticancer activities has gained attention from the scientific community and received TTLBF-YSPSAH Excellent Scientific Paper Award in 2016. Her passion for microbiology research enables her to dive deeper into the fascinating world of microbes, particularly in deciphering relationships between microbes and human diseases. There are trillions of microbes living in and out of the human body, forming what researchers call a “microbiome”. Along with this, the gut microbiome represents the largest bacteria population in an adult human, with roughly 10 trillion bacterial cells living in the colon (or 33 % of total bacteria cells in the human body). More importantly, the imbalance of microbial population or microbial dysbiosis has been associated with the development of human disease. She truly believes that studying the semicrobial signatures can improve general health and human wellbeing. They could be used as biomarkers for specific diseases/conditions or even drug targets in therapeutics or prevention strategies. As a Research Fellow, she also provides support to teaching and research activities for undergraduate students. She personally enjoys interacting with students and strongly believes in the power of communication. She hopes to help the younger minds to explore their interests in biomedical research, joining hands in building a better world for tomorrow.
